The season’s changed, should my skin care change as well?

Summer’s here. Finally. After the long months of damp, gray, dreary weather, we can enjoy the glorious warm sun. What changes should you make to your skin care regimen? Only a few changes are necessary, but they’re all important.

I’ll say it again, ALWAYS apply sunscreen. I harp on this a lot, really a lot, but it’s really important. A question I’m often asked is how exactly to I do this? Where does it fit in with my current routine? The answer is to cleanse your face and then apply your face cream or serum so that your skin can absorb the value of these products directly. Lastly, apply sunscreen. If you work indoors and only venture outside for breaks or a quick lunch, a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 is adequate. If you’re going to be in the sun for more than a short time, use a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher. Don’t forget to re-apply often!

Next, switch your heavier crème-based products for water-based items. The summer air has higher humidity, so the super moisturizing provided by a crème-based product isn’t necessary.

Exfoliate, but do it less frequently. Although sloughing off dead skin leaves your complexion glowing, it can also cause some sun sensitivity. If you tend to sweat, the combination of dead skin, sweat and skin oil is a prime recipe for clogged pores. Use a gentle scrub or clay masque.

Don’t forget your lips! Your lips can get a sun burn, too, so protect them with a lip balm with an SPF of at least 15.

Finally, get a fabulous looking wide-brimmed hat. A baseball cap doesn’t provide protection from the sun’s rays coming in at an angle. Think of Amal Clooney! Who wouldn’t want to have that style?

You’re gorgeous, now go enjoy your summer!
